Porsche’s Bold Move: Quickly Phasing Out the ICE Macan
Since its debut in 2014, the Porsche Macan has been a cornerstone of Porsche’s sales success, becoming the company’s best-selling model globally for many of the years since its introduction. With deliveries of an all-new electric Macan beginning this year, Automotive News is reporting that Porsche will end production of the gasoline-powered Macan in all markets by the end of 2026.
While Porsche’s decision to phase out the internal combustion engine (ICE) Macan might align with broader industry trends, is this strategy too risky versus offering both ICE and EV versions for a longer period of time?
EV adoption in Europe and China is accelerating rapidly. Thus, the swift transition to an EV-only Macan in those markets might be reasonable. However, the U.S. market still trails Europe and China in EV adoption. There is a risk this full transition to the EV Macan might alienate some potential U.S. buyers who also historically are new to the brand.
Supporting Porsche’s decision to go all-in with the EV Macan is the sales success of the Taycan, the company’s first all-electric vehicle. Taycan generally outsells Porsche’s ICE Panamera. Additionally, sales of the Taycan are considered to be incremental for Porsche, not cannibalizing any existing models. However, the Taycan was introduced as an all-new incremental nameplate which did not replace any other Porsche vehicle, unlike the EV Macan.
